New York City is a photographer’s delight! Walking is the best way to capture the various diverse neighborhoods and iconic landmarks of this amazing city. The St. John Divine Cathedral is one of those landmarks you must visit and explore. When you come upon this cathedral, you will be in awe of the beauty of this magnificent structure. The relief panels on the entrance doors were particularly interesting. The sequence of 48 relief panels represents scenes from the Old and New Testaments and the Apocalypse.
The Cathedral is one of the five largest church buildings in the world and a church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is located in New York City on and 112th Street in Manhattan’s Morningside Heights neighborhood. The interior of the Cathedral covers 121,000 square feet; its length is 601 feet; and height is 232 feet. It was designed in 1888 and the construction began in 1892. The original design was in the Byzantine Revival-Romanesque Revival styles but was changed to Gothic Revival in 1909. Unfortunately, a fire caused significant destruction in December 2001 and large portions of the Cathedral were closed for repairs but re-opened in November 2008.
Whether you are New Yorkers who have never visited, or tourists who come from all parts of the country and the world, you should add the Cathedral to your list of places to visit. You can read more about the Cathedral and see its many photos online, but here are just a few of the reliefs, that hopefully, will stimulate your interest and get you to visit this amazing Cathedral.
